Happy New Year! As we start 2019, I can’t help but look back on all of the success our school had in 2018. We said goodbye to our largest graduating class – though they will always be a part of our South Side family. We welcomed our newest class of enthusiastic and knowledgeable early learning interns from the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. During their senior year they serve in our classrooms assisting our teaching staff. We welcomed an innovative transition, stewarded new leadership on our Board, and continued to invest in our teachers.

I’m very excited for all the new year will hold as we build upon the excellence of service and community collaboration that South Side Learning & Development Center was founded upon nearly 100 years ago. My vision for South Side is one that includes working with our families and community partners to transform our community by fostering awareness, compassion, and opportunities for empowerment that go beyond the barriers of bureaucracy, economy, and status. My personal philosophy and belief is that a stronger tomorrow begins with a more playful today. That the best form of community development is not hidden in tax breaks or stimulus packages—but that through the creativity, joy and discovery of learning and play we can make significant impacts in our neighborhoods. Much like when we share a meal, play creates opportunities that enable us to come together, get to know each other and overcome biases and differences—even if only for a quick game of tag.

In the months to come, South Side Learning & Development Center will begin implementing our strategic plan to strengthen our services on the South Side. In addition to our nationally accredited early learning programs, this includes focusing efforts on family services, launching our Early Education Workforce Development Initiative, advocating for the children and families of Ohio, and expanding our partnerships. Please connect with me so we can talk about how to help empower our South Side families. I’d like to hear from you about how we can make a difference in helping make the South Side a more vibrant and thriving community for everyone during this New Year and for many more years to come.

As always, for the good of South Side,

Colin
